Night or waking night live-in care provides specialised overnight support for individuals with complex medical needs who require continuous or monitoring support during the night.
This ensures that individuals receive the attention they need 24/7, with a Personal Assistant present either sleeping on-site (night care) or staying awake and alert throughout the night (waking night care).
Types of Night Care:
Night Care (Sleeping Night)
The Personal Assistant sleeps at the home but is available to assist if needed. Typically, they can be woken up a few times during the night to attend to emergencies or medical needs (e.g. administering medication or helping with bathroom assistance)
Waking Night Care
The Personal Assistant remains awake and vigilant throughout the night, providing constant monitoring and support for individuals who require frequent or continuous attention (e.g. for those with complex healthcare requirements such as re-positioning, epilepsy, CPAP or BiPap support and blood sugar monitoring)
Even in overnight care, the principles of freedom, empowerment and choice are central.
Freedom
- Night care offers freedom for both individuals and their families by ensuring their loved ones are well-cared for, even during the night. It allows the individual to stay at home, in their own surroundings, rather than having to move to a residential, care or nursing home for overnight support.
- This care promotes peace of mind, knowing that help is available if something goes wrong at night, without losing the freedom of sleeping in a familiar environment.
Empowerment
- Individuals with complex needs are empowered through night care, as they can maintain control over their lives despite needing nighttime support. Whether it’s help getting in and out of bed, repositioning to avoid bedsores or managing conditions like sleep apnoea, night care allows them to rest comfortably and safely without compromising their autonomy.
- Waking night care is particularly empowering for those with conditions like epilepsy or respiratory issues, where constant supervision allows them to sleep more soundly knowing they are being closely monitored for their safety.
Choice
- Night care provides choice by offering different levels of support based on individual needs – whether the individual requires occasional assistance through a sleeping night carer or constant vigilance through waking night care. This ensures that care is customised and responsive, respecting the person’s preferences and medical requirements.
- Individuals and families can choose how care is delivered, deciding on the level of involvement the Personal Assistant has overnight, which can be adjusted based on changing needs or health conditions.
